The Top 10 states with the highest COVID death rates since vaccines became widely available are all led by Republican governors.
Three states — West Virginia, Wyoming and Florida — have suffered the highest COVID death rates since July 1, 2021, when free life-saving vaccines were readily available.
An analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found stark differences in COVID death rates in large Democratic states compared to their Republican counterparts. Residents of Florida, for example, were nearly three times as likely to die of COVID-19 as residents of California and more than twice as likely to die as New Yorkers.
More than 338,000 Americans have died since free vaccines became widely available. This analysis covers the period from July 1, 2021 to March 7, 2022.
